Description

GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK: 

Performs responsible work planning, coordinating and implementing recreational, social, leisure and educational programs for seniors; does related work as required.  Work is performed under regular supervision.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:

Develops, organizes, promotes and directs a variety of activities and programs to meet the diverse needs of older adults, including day and overnight trips, holiday programming, special events and recreational outings.

  • Organizes and directs regular weekly and monthly activities, including games, art exhibits, shopping trips, lectures and other special events.
  • Establishes and maintains relationships with community agencies, civic groups and organizations, and individual citizens offering services and programs beneficial to senior citizens.
  • Prepares fliers, brochures and announcements for newspapers and local outlets to publicize senior center programs, trips, special events and activities.
  • Prepares bulk mailings as appropriate.
  • Serves as advisor to area senior citizen clubs and organizations.
  • Attends meetings and provides information regarding center programs and services.
  • Serves as a travel guide and chaperone on trips and outings.
  • Compiles data for monthly reports for submission to Senior Center Director.
  • Performs related tasks as required.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

General knowledge of the philosophy, principles and practices of senior center activities; general knowledge of the County’s policies and procedures; ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with County officials, associates, seniors and the general public.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school with course work in human services, gerontology or related field and moderate experience planning and coordinating programs and activities for older adults.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must be able to perform sedentary work exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina.

Possession of CPR certification.
