GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:                                                                                                        
Performs intermediate technical work involving determining the eligibility of applicants/recipients to receive assistance under social service income maintenance programs; does related work as required.  Work is performed under regular supervision.

Example of Duties

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:
Determining eligibility for public assistance programs; maintaining records and files; preparing reports.

  • Handles eligibility determination cases and/or cases where clients are eligible for a variety of programs.
  • Interviews applicants for assistance to determine their eligibility, securing and verifying necessary social or medical information; makes eligibility decisions.
  • Performs intake functions for assigned program; processes applications for public assistance in accordance with established rules, regulations and procedures.
  • Maintains active cases to accurately reflect recipients' changing circumstances, revises payments, adds and deletes recipients, changes programs to meet client needs.
  • As required, re-determines eligibility of recipients for continuing assistance.
  • Schedules interviews for recipients monthly.
  • Educates recipients on income maintenance programs and assesses their need for the programs and other available services; informs clients of other available resources.
  • Verifies and documents information obtained during interviews.
  • Assists applicants and recipients in completing applications and forms.
  • Enters food stamp information into computer; uses computer to make inquiries regarding program related matters.
  • Verifies all information through independent sources.
  • Prepares yearly revisions; processes monthly reports, prepares budgets, makes changes.
  • Maintains records and prepares reports.
  • Refers clients to other departments in the agency or other agencies to meet client needs.
  • Performs related tasks as required.

 

Typical Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
General knowledge of the principles and practices of public social service organizations; general knowledge of the rules and regulations governing the processing and/or review of applications for income maintenance programs; ability to learn the forms and program procedures; ability to solve problems within scope of responsibility; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, associates and the general public; ability to analyze facts and to exercise sound judgment in arriving at conclusions; ability to communicate ideas effectively, orally and in writing; ability to prepare clear and concise reports.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
One year of experience as an Income Maintenance Caseworker, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
This is sedentary work requiring the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects; work requires reaching, fingering, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word, and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels, and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operation of machines, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is not subject to adverse environmental conditions
