Description
GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:
Performs intermediate semiskilled work in the installation, construction, repair and maintenance of water and sewer lines and appurtenances; does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Utilities Superintendent/ORC.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:
Preparing, repairing and maintaining water, sewer and related system; performing other public utilities maintenance work as required.

- Installs, repairs and replaces sewer and water lines and related facilities.
- Unstops sewer lines with sewer rodding machine or sewer tapes.
- Repairs line leaks; makes water and sewer taps, installs and removes water meters.
- Changes meters; repairs meter leaks; performs water pressure tests.
- Locates lines and main service lines for contractors and other utility companies.
- Performs landscaping and surface restoration at job site.
- Reads and records meter readings.
- May operate trucks, tractors, back?hoe, tapping machines and other equipment in connection with the above tasks.
- Runs errands, picks up supplies and materials.
- Performs other utilities work as assigned.
- Works cut-off list.
- Performs related tasks as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
General knowledge of the tools, materials and equipment used in the installation, replacement, maintenance and repair of utility lines; general knowledge of a variety of maintenance and manual tasks involved in the installation, maintenance, repair and replacement of water and sewer facilities and appurtenances; general knowledge of the use of common hand and power tools; general knowledge of the safe use and operation and preventive maintenance of common automotive and mechanical equipment; ability to perform manual and semiskilled labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions; dependability; good physical condition.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and some experience in water and sewer maintenance work.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
This is medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, oils, and wearing a respirator. The worker may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina.
